Chapter Seventeen

"I want to see him. I want to talk to him," Sean said. He tried to stop the rising fury inside him, but it was next to impossible.

"You know that wouldn't be a good idea," Agent Carr said. "Don't worry, he's in the holding area. We just want him to answer some questions."

"But if he said he's innocent, then he’s innocent," Sean said.

"But he still hasn't been able to explain the offshore bank account," Drew pointed out.

"He's being framed. I believe him." Sean scraped his fingers through his hair. "Maybe someone set up the account so they could pin all of this on him. I'll believe that before I believe he's guilty."

"Someone is tipping off Francesco," Drew quietly told him. "If Tanner doesn't have any kind of communication, we might be able to capture the drug lord."

"And if he doesn't show up next time?"

Rena suddenly spoke up. "I may know a way we can get him to one of the fights. You said underground fighting was his weakness. Make it so tempting that he can't resist."

Drew frowned. "I do realize you need to know some of what is going on to protect yourself, but we know what we're doing."

"Apparently not since you haven't caught him yet," she said.

"I want to hear her out," Agent Carr said.

She cocked an eyebrow at Drew. "When the promoter calls me, he always uses a burner phone. There's no way to contact him, but before the next fight, I could casually mention if he wanted to make some real money then bring in the top ten fighters all at once. A sort of free for all, and the winner takes all."

"What makes you think he'll go for it?" Agent Carr asked.

She smiled. "Because it'll make him a lot of money."

“No,” Sean said. “It’s too risky for you.”

She planted her hands on her hips. “Are you questioning my fighting abilities?”

His eyebrows came together. “No, but even you have to admit it’s dangerous.”

“I know what I’m doing.”

Drew was shaking his head. "Francesco might not show. It would be too much of a risk for him."

"Maybe, maybe not," Agent Carr said. "He's probably chomping at the bit now because he's missing fights. I think he’ll show. If he doesn't, maybe someone else is tipping him off."

"I don't want to think that Tanner is the guilty party any more than anyone else in this room," Drew said. "I like the guy. Maybe staging a big fight is the best way."

It was a bad idea. They were already taking a chance using Rena. He didn’t want her putting her life in more danger.

On the way back to the apartment, Sean continued trying to talk sense into her.

“It was a crazy idea,” he told her.

"But until Francesco is caught, how are you going to prove Tanner is innocent?" Rena asked.

He still didn’t like the idea, but they didn't say another word about it until they were in the apartment, and then Sean turned on her. "Is that the reason you're doing this? For Tanner? You only met him that first night.
